Class: Listening
Level: 2A
Instructor: Angel Rios
This class was very focused on vocabulary to prepare the students for a quiz that they took during the second half of the class. Mr. Rios began by giving them a mini practice vocab quiz. He would orate the definition of the term and have them right down the word, spelled correctly. When the practice quiz was complete, Mr. Rios had each of the students write one of the answers on the board. Then, much like in his Reading class, he had the students evaluate each response, letting them make corrections before he would. After reviewing and correcting the practice answers, the students took the quiz (which they were allowed to use notes for). Mr. Rios explained to me how the quiz was broken down, what sections related to what topics they had covered in the weeks prior, and why they were allowed to use notes. He said that the incentive of getting to use their notes in a helpful way (like on a test) was a way to encourage the students to take notes and develop and practice their note-taking techniques. When the quiz was finished, Mr. Rios collected them and then went over the answers with the students much like he had before. He ended by asking the students both how they felt about the quiz and how they felt about being able to use their notes. He seemed to really value their feedback.
Throughout the three observations I learned that all of these topics overlap. Languages do not work in a bubble (where you can only focus on grammar and not cover vocabulary or cover listening without reading or speaking).
