Summary and Feedback:
During our last session, the student and I settled on a schedule for us to work with. On Tuesdays we will work on Listening skills and on Thursdays we will work on Speaking. Although our main skill used on Tuesday was also speaking, the student is fairly advanced so I still need more time to listen to him speak so I can fully assess his problem areas. Over the course of the hour I asked him several unrelated questions that required him to speak for several minutes at a time. These questions included:
- What is your favorite meal? Why? Do you have any particular memory associated with this meal?
- Are there any foods that you have never had that you would like to try?
- What is your favorite movie/TV show? Why? What is interesting to you about it?
- What do you do for work? What kinds of things do you do?
When we reached the end of our session I explained to him what my reasoning was for asking the questions I did and addressed what issues had occurred. It seems like the biggest problem area is with the use of singular nouns when context calls for a plural form. I reiterated to the student that, regardless of the few issues that had occurred, he was still performing at a level that should allow him to easily speak with any English speaker. The mistakes made did not render him incomprehensible, but are rather just minor details that we will work on.
