Classroom Observation 1
I started my first day of observing an ESL class in Heilan Wang's composition class for CIES's Group 2 students. Wang began the class by discussing the homework assignment given to the students on a previous day, and going over each individual student's work. She followed this by giving the students a lesson on the phrases, "for example" and "such as", using this lesson in conjunction with how to express comparing and contrasting. These were used in relation to the class's homework assignment, which was to provide a thesis statement for an essay to explain the differences and similarities to Tallahassee and the students' home towns. This was accomplished by having the class participate in fill in the blank exercises, followed by writing sample sentences and reading them aloud to the class, concluding in writing a paragraph. While these tasks were being performed, Ms Wang would look around the class, evaluating each individual student's progress and asking me to help judge a student's written paragraph.
