I observed Andrew Wilson's Group 3A Listening Class of seven students. The teacher had a good rapport with the students. There was a mix of routine learning activities and spontaneous in-context learning. New vocabulary was integrated throughout the class time. A routine activity was "word of the day." At the start of class, the teacher introduced a new word and students talked about what it could mean, what is sounded like, etc. Then the teacher explained the meaning, forms, and usage, and the students used the word in sentences. Another activity was dictation by the teacher while the students transcribed what they heard. Then each student wrote a sentence of the dictation on the board, and the class discussed and corrected the sentences. In this listening exercise, the students tended to miss the small connector or modifier words, and the teacher used that mistake for a mini-lesson. In a previous class, students had taken notes while listening to a lecture. In this class, they used their notes to answer questions about the lecture. They discussed their answers in pairs and then as a class. For a final activity, the students had a printout of song lyrics with some words missing. The students listened to the song twice for all the words, but also to fill in the blanks on the printed lyric sheet. The outcome was to be discussed at the next class.
