I
observed a Group 4A Speaking class of 13 students. Instructor Angel Rios told
me that the previous day had included a formal speaking assignment, so today
there were informal activities. A student gave a prepared presentation on the topic "Assisted Death.” She asked students to give their opinions on certain points. All students asked questions
and offered opinions. Vocabulary was taught in context.
When
time was up, the class divided into three groups for the next activity. There
were two opinion questions to discuss; each allotted 10 minutes. The first was: Are
we controlling smart phones or are they controlling us? The second was: Can you be
successful without money? Professor Rios put voice recorders on each group’s
table. He can identify each student’s voice. He will listen to the
recordings and provide comments and correction on grammar use in context, vocabulary
use, creativity of ideas and application to the topic.
During
all activities, the instructor circulated, observed, answered questions, and
prompted participation. He took notes on each student’s contribution, and wrote vocabulary words to review later. This class demonstrated the skills of
expressing ideas and giving opinions in areas of interest with adequate
accuracy. Students were able to provide details, personal examples, and
descriptions to support their opinions.
