Leslie TS #4
Leslie TS #4 CIES Building 5/21/18 3-4 pm
Second meeting with tutee
from Saudi Arabia. Began by asking him to write the alphabet on the board. He
did so and left out two letters. Asked questions to elicit the missing letters.
Reviewed by writing, pronouncing again. Taught vowels and consonants. He could
name three of the vowels and did not know the word “vowels.” Spent the rest of
the lesson on vowels. He thought of words using vowels, wrote them on
the board, and pronounced them. I provided clues to elicit corrections. Review and repetition of words and similar words, patterns. Teaching of other
vocabulary in context. He asked questions about words he knew but were more
complicated. He put forth a good effort, and seemed to be encouraged by his work.
I did notice that he used Arabic pronunciation rules, for example, confusing b
and p. I introduced the five key words used to remember the five short
sounds of the vowels.
a - at
e - Ed
i – it
o - odd
u – up
Student applied this to
writing words he knew with vowels with these sounds. I gave him the rationale
for this work. He seemed to understand that it was necessary and important for
him even if an instructor had not covered it yet or had taught it in a
different way. Encouraged him to practice every day some of the letter and word
writing and pronouncing that we had done.
