Paige CO #3

The third class I observed was Mrs. Clappetta's Listening 1A Class. The first activity they did was a listening activity. They had to listen to 7 people talk about where they are from and make note of at least 3 people and the main points of each person's speech. Then, the students had to compare what they wrote with a partner to fill in some missing holes. They then repeated the tape to get more notes and compared with a partner again.This was repeated a third time. At the end, the students were given a short quiz on what they heard and had a class review of the answers. Afterwards, they worked on speaking as well by stating which of the people the students wanted to meet most and why. The last activity in the class was the students had to listen carefully to 3 sentences Mrs. Clappeta said out loud. The first round they were instructed to listen only. The second time and third time they had to write what she said, filling in any details they missed on the third time. Afterwards , they had to read aloud what they wrote.
As a teacher, Mrs. Clappeta spoke very loudly and clearly and repeated what she said multiple times. I thought this was really good considering this was a lower level listening class and the students seemed able to perceive what she said. Also, when they would speak, she would repeat their mistake out loud giving the students a chance to correct themselves. All in all, this was a great class and I'm glad I got to observe it.

Michelle TS #10 Dojun

Dojun and I had been using news articles for  many of our sessions, so I decided to change it up a bit and show a 5 minute clip of the show Friends. The clip is about a discussion between Phoebe, Joey and Rachel (titled “Joey doesn’t share food”). The speech was a bit fast, but Dojun mentioned that the subtitles helped, although we did have to pause the video often to ensure he was understanding the video. Each time I paused, I asked him to summarize what the scene showed and then asked if he had questions about vocabulary used. It was difficult to explain what clams are until I realized I could google a picture and send it to him.

Michelle TS #7 Mohammad

Mohammad received his essay back from the instructor about the different modes of transportation he had worked on previously. Although he did not get the highest score possible, he still did well. However, the instructor made a few of the same comments throughout his paper - basically that he was not fully supporting his statements with appropriate background information. We discussed the importance of creating an outline so that it’s easier to organize ideas and then easier to write the assignment. I’m not sure that he will employ the use of outlines every time, but we did discuss the different types of outlines he can use, and then created one for the paper he had worked on. It seems his instructors also incorporate outlines for writing assignments, but he is not doing this for himself when working on homework.
