Topic: Writing
Materials: previous essay
Today PJ and I tried a new essay topic, compare and contrast Korea and Hawaii. I picked a topic that PJ is familiar with and has plenty of anecdotes about. The main focus of these tutoring sessions is to encourage PJ to write more detailed descriptions and more complex sentences. So, I picked a topic that he should be easily able to write about. We discussed the graphic organizer as a planning technique. We also covered new transitional phrases. I had PJ pick out two phrases to use for comparisons and one for contrasts. We reviewed the definitions and the contextual usages of each phrase. His homework was to write his essay using the three new transitional phrases, and to include a clearly outlined thesis statement in his introduction.
