Tutoring Session #8 of 16
Topic: Writing
Materials: previous essays, transitional phrases worksheet
PJ and I worked on strengthening his essay writing skills with a new planning approach. After reading his essay about comparing Korea and Hawaii, I realized that many of the sentence were simple. I was curious about this because when we verbally discuss his brainstorming, he is very eloquent and detailed. So where does this detail go when words go from verbal to being written down? He said that he loses his thoughts when he starts to write his plan. He added that he wrote a really good memoir for school the other day, so I asked to look at it. The form of memoir was more free form and not structured into paragraphs. I decided to try a different way of planning. For homework, I told PJ to freely write everything he could think of comparing basketball and soccer. The goal was if he freely wrote, without worrying about transitions and structure, that he could be more detailed like in his memoir. Then, he was to review his writing and pick out three main points to start a plan, so during the next session we could turn the free writing into a structured essay.
