Abdulrahman
and I discussed cultural shock and critical incidents this time. I explained to
him what a cultural shock is and asked him what were his experiences with that.
He said one of the bigger things was seeing women who are not fully covered and
also being able to have conversations with them. Women and men in Saudi Arabia
cannot speak to each other and women are expected to be fully covered at all
times. He said he had only seen women who were not full covered when he visited
UAE once and sometimes in movies. It was a bit of a cultural shock for him, but
he got used to it pretty easily. He said that he actually prefers talking to
women more since they are more willing to listen to him patiently and without interruptions.
We also talked about a critical incident in his life. He said that his critical
incident was with a police officer during the first few days in America. He was
driving his car (with his brother as a passenger) but failed to make a full
stop for a stop sign. The cop stopped his car, walked up to them and
Abdulrahman hurriedly tried to get the registration out of the glove
compartment. The cop reacted angrily and told him to stop moving. Abdulrahman
was shocked for a moment and was not fully understanding what was happening.
