Tutoring Session #1
Abdulrahman
wanted me to tutor him because he is interested in law and I happened to have a
degree in paralegal studies. He said that he would like most of our tutoring
sessions to be concentrated on law, legal terminology and the law school
admission process. I devised a few loose plans of how I could incorporate law
into our tutoring sessions. For our first session, I decided to concentrate on
legal vocabulary. I found a website with a big list of legal terms and picked
the ones that I thought would be beneficial to him as somebody who is
interested in business law. We went through the list of the terms that I had
made, I explained each one of them to him and we compared Saudi Arabian and
American law a little bit. Since he had already studied law in Saudi Arabia, he
already had a great deal of background knowledge about the process. Although
Saudi Arabia differs from America in many ways culturally, at their core, legal
processes in different countries are actually very similar. Abdulrahman did not
have too hard of a time understanding the terms and what they meant. We then
used the words in sentences and I gave him a scenario wherein each term would
be used. His homework was to memorize the terms and to use them in context for
the next class.
