Mane - TS#14
Tutoring #14
Our second story was far shorter in length than the previous
one but it required a longer schema building. I decided to divide the story
into sections again and have discussions that are meant to serve as schema building
activities, with PJ after each section. The story was about an African American
mother and her relationship with her two daughters. The story also explored
themes of reparations for African Americans, history of segregation as well as
Islam in the African-American community. I had a lot of schema building to do.
I was not sure how much PJ already knew about any of the aforementioned topics,
so I asked him if he has ever heard the word segregation and what if he knows
the historic meaning of it. He proceeded to tell me that he has learned about
segregation at school. This made my job a little bit easier. From there we
discussed other topics and started reading the story. As I had done in the
previous two classes, I stopped after each section I had marked off to ask PJ comprehension
questions. Once we finished the reading we also went through the comprehension
questions at the end of the reading.
