Abdulrahman had
previously related to me that he wants our tutoring lessons to concentrate on
legal terminology as well as speaking. He felt that speaking was one of his
weakest skills. Since we heavily concentrated on legal terms in our first two
tutoring sessions, I decided the third one should be concentrated on speaking.
From our previous conversations I had noticed that Abdulrahman enjoys debating
a lot and being challenged, so I decided to have a debate for our speaking
lesson. Our debate topic was how
necessary is a jury to a criminal proceeding. In Saudi Arabia, they don’t have
juries and court hearings are generally very private. For my schema building
exercise, I related to Abdulrahman what the responsibilities of a jury are in
America and how criminal records as well as criminal hearings are more often
than not publicly available. Abdulrahman argued the side that said that juries
are not necessary, while I argued that they are. Abdulrahman was successfully
able to argue that juries usually don’t know much about law, therefore it
doesn’t make sense to let them decide on legal issues. I argued on
anti-corruption basis and that jury can be a tool against corruption. Overall, Abdulrahman seemed to have enjoyed the lesson.
