I spent another day with Hanqiing, this time we had lunch at
Chick-fil-a, rather than our usual meeting place at the Hecht House. As my
teacher requested, I asked if he ever misunderstood an aspect of a foreign
culture and handled it in a wrong or embarrassing way, otherwise known as a
critical-incident. Hanqing said he didn’t really experience one here in
America, but he did during his trip to Japan. If I understood Hanqing
correctly, apologizing is not a very common practice in China, especially among
close friends. However in Japan it’s kind of a recurring thing done even in the
most minor of circumstances. You can probably guess where this is going, with some
people thinking that Hanqing was being pretty rude when he didn’t apologize like
most Japanese people would. Considering some of the other critical-incidents I’ve
heard, this is comparatively minor one.
