I spoke with Hanqing again for the third time. Our topics of
conversation were pretty varied, usually centering on movies and video games.
However it started off a little depressing at first, with Hanqing expressing
frustration on the difficulty he’s experiencing trying to learn and speak
English, particularly with his fluency and accent. I tried to comfort him, saying
that adults who learn English as a second language rarely lose their accent and
that fluency is not as important as being able to express your ideas. Looking
back, I wasn’t sure if I did a good job at getting that idea across and, even
if it did, made him feel better about the situation he is in. It became a pretty light-hearted conversation
afterwards though. We talked about some
of the types of games and movies we liked, and how those industries and
cultures operate in China and America.
