I’ve had my second tutoring session with Amnazo’s family.
This time it was just Amnazo and her two sons, Omari and Kiza. I went in
expecting to spend most of the day trying to help improve their reading and
spelling skills, but I realized that the family still has trouble memorizing
their alphabet especially the youngest son, Kiza. Realizing this, I had the
family practice writing their alphabet. I also taught them the difference
between vowels and consonants, and the short and long forms of vowels. This was
meant to prepare the family’s reading skills and some of the inconsistencies
that come with the sounds vowel represent. I felt that Amnazo was the only one
that really paying attention and understood what I was saying, despite the fact
that the two boys had the better English comprehension skills than she did.
