Class Observations 5/8/2018

I observed Group 3A in their reading class with Rios. The opening discussion was about higher education and the issues with so many people attending college. Many students explained that people have to chose between college or military for their career, and at least pursue a PhD for education. Then, students read the article and underlined the parts that corresponded to the questions on the side of the text. Students analyzed questions like "what does the title mean?" (The article title was “Popping the higher education bubble.") Going around the room, students volunteered to read. While they read, they were asked to explain verbs and vocab such as: founder/investor/drop out. The students marked on their papers the answers and underlined vocabulary and key points. Then, the students individually repeated the article summary in their own words based on their section. Some specific vocabulary that they used:
    • Fellowship vs program
    • Emerging, verb
    • Glass half full half empty idioms
Then, Rios returns graded homework/reading logs and gives them the opportunity to gain points back by fixing mistakes.
