Allison TS#2 (Mardioli)

5/16/18
Tutoring Session #2 of 16

Topic: Writing/Grammar
Materials: prompts from Rios' 3A class

I tutored Mardioli, a Brazilian woman, for the first time today. After having an initial discussion to get to know each other, I learned that she is a mother of two and her children are also here in the US. They attend local middle schools and so her whole family is here to learn English. I also learned that she is a lawyer back home in Brazil, and she speaks both Spanish and Portuguese. She explained that for writing prompts, she often has trouble getting to the point because she is used to including many details in her legal writing. This follows the video we watched in class on Tuesday, where we discussed the cultural differences of structuring essays. Mardioli has hard time writing in the direct American way, so we went over one of her in class essays and identified what the key points were. She is going to rewrite the essay so it is only one paragraph and includes only the most important details. We also went over more of her writing exercises and while her writing is very strong, she consistently has issues with prepositions and gerund/infinitive agreements. This is the first time in my tutoring where I have had to say "you just need to memorize the patterns" for deciding which to use, and I explained the patterns that we covered last week in TEFL class. We also worked on her transitional phrases; she wants to use fancy and long transitions but sometimes they do not work in context. I helped her restructure her essays and explained why the grammar was wrong when she didn't understand. For homework, she is rewriting the essays so I can look over them again before she submits them in class. We are also reviewing prepositions and infinitives/gerunds next week.
