Class Observation #1 - Group 4A Reading

Today I observed Olivia James' Group 4 reading class. There were only six students in the class, and they seemed to be able to speak English very well. The students were practicing for the reading comprehension portion of the GRE. They had been given an article to read and were required to summarize it using Cornell notes which is a structure that helps students pick out main ideas. The students were also learning the structure of research papers. They were given two articles and had to compare and contrast them using a venn diagram. The professor had me and another TEFL student complete the activity together. The articles were about the difficulty international students have making friends in America. It was interesting to read given the relevancy to the students in their current situations. I appreciated how the professor kept us involved and gave us the activity to do so that we could learn her methods of teaching reading comprehension.
