Tutoring Session #1 - Brenda
Today I had my first tutoring session with my tutee Brenda. Brenda is from Mexico and arrived in the US just last month. She is in CIES Group 2, and since she just started learning English, she was not very confident with speaking. When trying to assess her level, I realized that she needed the most help conjugating verbs. Today we talked a little bit about ourselves so that she can practice speaking and listening. In our conversation, I tried to incorporate topics that would help her prepare for her grammar test tomorrow on the simple present, simple past, and present continuous tenses. I also wrote down questions for her to write down a few sentences in each tense. While Brenda did well writing in the simple present and continuous present, she struggled forming sentences in the simple past tense because of all the irregular verbs. I made a list of common irregular words in the simple past for her to look over before her test. For only being here a few weeks, it was very impressive that Brenda could hold a conversation in English. I am confident that she will continue to progress over the next few weeks.
