I observed Ryan Fleming’s Group 2B Reading class of nine students.
He gave a brief introduction of the tasks for the day. In a previous class,
students had taken notes on a narrative they had read. Today students discussed
their answers to multiple choice questions to measure comprehension of the
narrative. The instructor demonstrated the “think out loud” strategy to analyze
each answer choice. The class participated in ruling out choices by not finding
the information in the body of the text. Also, he taught understanding the
question clearly to be able to understand the correct response. He thoroughly explained
the correct answers and located them in the text body. He questioned students
about distinguishing the main idea and the details. Also, students matched
vocabulary words from the narrative with the definitions. This was review and
modeling for the next activity. Students were paired to read another article
and take notes on it together. Then the class discussed each pair’s notes.
Throughout the class, the instructor taught grammar and vocabulary in context. He walked around the room, used students’ names, and did formative checks of asking “Does anyone want more explanation?”, “What are we doing now?”.
