Leslie CP #1 CIES Building 5/9/18 4-5 pm
This was the first meeting with my conversation partner, at the CIES building. He is from Angola and his native language is Portuguese. He recently reached mandatory retirement age as a civil engineer. Thus, he is free to travel, and wants to learn English to better experience the world and its peoples. He said his English is self-taught; he is in Level 2 at CIES. This is his first time in an English-speaking country; he arrived three weeks ago. I felt like I understood him fairly well. His pronunciation was difficult to comprehend sometimes. However, he was aware of this and was able to correctly write the problem words. He said he wants to improve his listening and speaking to facilitate functional and social communication. We talked about how he makes initial contact with persons. Topics of introductory conversation seem to be the same in Angola as in this country. He said this endeavor is challenging, but he is motivated to improve. We discussed how the language learning path will have its ups and downs. He said he thinks it will be helpful to have an assigned conversation partner.
