At this
meeting, we used the “Describing Your Country and Culture” handout. We started
with the first question of the nine listed: “What is a common way to greet each
other in your first culture (verbal and nonverbal communication) and how does
this change depending on gender and relationship?”
We talked about these customs in Angola and the U.S. Then he asked me about his
observations of children since he has been in Tallahassee. He said he has been
invited into homes with children and spoken to adults with children in other
settings. He said the children ignored him. He wondered why the parents have
not taught their children about greeting and speaking with adults. He said he
did not understand this and wanted me to explain. I assured him that is was
nothing to do with him, not to take it personally, and that his questions were
valid. My explanation and our related discussion in many areas, including
parenting, lasted for almost the rest of the time. We will continue with the
handout questions at future meetings.
