Leslie TS #2
Leslie TS #2 CIES Building 5/14/18 3-4 pm
This was the first meeting with my second tutee. We met at
CIES in an empty classroom. He came to the U.S. two weeks ago, and his native
language is Arabic. He said he has a Ph.D. in anthropology and philosophy. He
is Level 1 at CIES. His reason for learning English is to further his academic
knowledge and interests by being able to read books, articles, etc. that are
not translated to Arabic. Our session was used for introduction,
rapport-building, and assessment. There was difficulty in communicating. I understood
that he wants to focus his studies on reading and writing; he said these are
more difficult than listening and speaking. He showed me some of his work in
his composition workbook, and we discussed the questions and answers he asked
about. I will review the CIES criteria for Level 1. Also, I will use the
information in the Snow and Campbell text, particularly the reading chapter and
materials, and other teaching methods for elementary level reading skills. He
seems motivated, and said he thought tutoring could be helpful.
