Met with student at CIES. He said
that he had done his tutor-assigned homework and it had been helpful. For
example, he had befriended a Level 4 student and had a good conversation in
English. He said a vocabulary word we had studied last session had been the
topic of a reading comprehension test. That had enabled him to answer test
questions correctly. This led to learning another word -- "coincidence." Student has studied English in school in China since age 6. He has a
placement in graduate school at FSU. Even though he acknowledges he has much to
learn in reading and writing, he wishes to use his tutoring time for listening
and speaking, with him doing most of the speaking. He is open to all
correction, but most conversational speaking errors are in pronunciation and
word usage. He spoke at length about his home city in China, Chinese history,
his schooling, his parents, his career goals, his cooking. He asks for specific
or correct words or synonyms for some of the words he uses. We discuss the
words I suggest, look up definitions, and listen to them on sound files. Then
he uses these words in speaking. I offer new words for certain
situations/events he talks about, such as "icicle,"
"traumatic," "mutton," introvert/extrovert." He checks
dictionary and confirms that the words have his intended meaning. We discuss other
new words this way.
