Student began by talking about the first episode of “The
History of China” on PBS. I had sent him
the link and assigned it for homework. He said it was very good and generally
easy to understand the Englishman who is the narrator (and also fluent in
Chinese). He asked me about vocabulary words from a reading text he had done in
class. We discussed many aspects of the words. This led to some of the letter
sounds he has difficulty with. He cannot distinguish the vowel sounds of “bad”
and “bed.” He said he can understand what word is meant from the context. But
he cannot hear the difference, so he cannot learn it to speak it. We reviewed
the short sounds of vowels. He worked on pronunciation of words to
practice these sounds. He listened to me, and we listened to sound files on his
laptop computer. He was doing much better by slowing down, enunciating, and
practicing. Another difficulty is pronunciation of v and w. We practiced
speaking words with those sounds.
