On Tuesday I had my first tutoring session with Mrs. Jaiyoung Kim. We met in Strozier. The first thing I did was ask her a few diagnostic questions. This was done to determine what our main focus would be for the following sessions. Mrs. Kim's first and only language is Korean and she moved to the States last October. She has only lived in Tallahassee and lives with her parents and her kids. She is studying for her Master's of Public Administration. If you couple her studying with taking care of her kids, she has stated she has no room for fun. Her main reason for studying English is to help her do better in her government job, and her main reason for tutoring is to engage in more speaking practice. During the session, I noted that she listens pretty well, however, the speaker has to talk slowly for her to feel comfortable to respond. As far as her speaking, she has a broad but also limited range of vocabulary. However, she was able to answer comprehend and understand all of my diagnostic questions.
After the questions, we engaged in further talks about her family life and places to eat. Listening to her speak, grammar-wise, she did very well with most of her subject-verb agreements, but mixed up plural and singular noun endings. When this happened, all I did was repeat the word as a question and she recognized it was wrong and quickly corrected herself.
At the end of the session, I made a plan for our next session to be role-play. The role play we will engage in will be centered around everyday situations, like shopping, making plans with someone on the phone, etc. This way, I can center it around her wish to learn more about usual phrases English speakers use in context.
