On Wednesday, I had my second tutoring session with Abdulrahman. What I had for him was a set of role play cards. He randomly picked 1 of 5 cards with a situation on it. We then had to act out a situation on the flashcard. The 5 different scenarios were: A job interview, a car accident and calling to say you will miss class, giving a friend advice, ordering food at a restaurant, and giving directions to a class.
During the activity, I made mental notes as to certain phrases or words he said that were incorrect in that context. After each scenario, I provide Abdulrahman with verbal feedback.
Overall, he did very well in each situations with only minor issues. One of the scenarios were short, so he did not elaborate too much, but the rest of the scenarios went very smoothly. As far as flow, he did take some time to think and pull responses from his mind, so I feel that was good. Some things he could work on were mostly grammar based. For instance, plural noun endings and subject verb agreements but there were less instances noticed than last session.
At the end, we drew from the advice to a friend scenario and participated in discussions about relationships. As we wrapped the session, I asked if he liked the little game we did, if he felt comfortable, and if it was helpful. He responded that it was good and he liked it. So for our next session, I will see if we would play it again but make one or two of the scenarios more challenging and the rest based on everyday situations.
