he feels better prepared to converse with the students and faculty at the
College of Engineering, where he will start classes in August. He is trying to
get work at that college for more English practice. He said this past CIES
session he has increased his confidence in his English speaking in addition to
his vocabulary and facility in producing communicative speech. We reviewed
aspects of speech, pronunciation, and vocabulary—introducing new words,
phrases, speech acts, and idioms. Also responded to his questions on cultural
behaviors and ways of interacting with people based on the situation,
relationship, transaction, etc. He said some people have told him he is
loquacious. I said that is a good thing and very important in order to keep
improving in speaking. We were able to talk about certain political and social
issues in his country openly and respectfully. We both remarked on that and
appreciated it. I think those topics were good ones (along with the many
neutral and light-hearted topics we conversed about) for him to communicate
about in English. This was the last tutoring session. He thanked me for my help
and patience, and I thanked him for the opportunity to get to know him.
