I asked tutee if there were areas of his work
that would be on his final exams that he had questions about or wanted to
review. He said no. He seemed confident about written tests and said that he is
much worse in speaking and listening. We continued to work on functional and
social speech (dialogues and conversations) to focus on pronunciation
difficulties. He talked about how he plays basketball. I made the
analogy that in order to progress in basketball it is necessary to practice for
hours on each skill. He made a list of some of his problem words and will practice
pronunciation of each 30 times a day. He will record his speech and check against
and mimic the pronunciation sound files on https://www.merriam-webster.com/
He said that he is not sure what to do sometimes
when he is listening and does not understand someone. We talked about how and
why some words he knows he does not know when some people speak them. I gave
him an index card with questions that he can ask the speaker to check his
understanding or have the speaker repeat or explain what was said.
