Tutoring #12
For our first class, PJ and I read a story about a family
that is drowning in debt but still attempts to keep up appearances. I read the
story in advance to prepare for the class. The story was very long so I decided
to divide it into a few different sections and came up with questions to ask PJ
after each section. The questions served three purposes. They were meant to
check PJ’s reading comprehension, to make sure that he did not miss anything
integral to the story line, and schema building for the next section coming up.
Before staring the reading, PJ and I read the comprehension questions at the
end of the story. Reading the questions ahead of time will help PJ in knowing
what he is supposed to look for while reading the text it will also give him a
better idea of what the story is about. After reading the questions, we read the
summary for the story and then started reading the actual story. Since the
story was long and we stopped throughout the story so that I can ask questions,
we did not have enough time to completely finish it. So, we continued the rest
of the story during the next session.
