Tuesday, May 29, I had another meeting with Jaiyoung. Our main goal was to get her speaking about her culture and the differences between hers and mine. The rationale behind this was in her field she may run into other foreigners who may have a different culture than hers and an opportunity to share with one another. During our facilitated discussion, I provided her with questions such as:
"What is an important custom for you?"
"If you could change one thing about your culture, what would it be?"
"Something you like and dislike about your culture?"
Towards the end of the culture discussion we got on the topic of formal vs informal words in the English language. While we do not have a specific list of such words, I went over with her on the overall feeling a word or phrase would give based on whom it is directed towards. For example, using " I apologize" vs. "Sorry or I'm sorry" in the direction of ones boss. Overall, we had a great session.
