Having a tutoring session with Amnazo and her kids, we
began, as usual, with writing down the alphabet with both upper and lower case
letters. Thinking of a lesson to follow up with that, I noticed that Omari was
more interested in drawing than being tutored English (something that I can
definitely relate to when I was a kid and even at the age I’m in now). I
decided to use this as a compliment to the session, pointing to various parts of
the human body on Omari’s drawing and using that as a reading/ spelling and vocabulary
lesson. In hindsight I’m not sure that it was a good idea to use it as a
spelling lesson, using relatively complex words for beginners like ‘stomach’, ‘shoes’,
or ‘shoulder’.
